From the Birth of Things to the Failure of Brute Strength
The Dao gives birth to one; one gives birth to two; two give birth to three; three give birth to all things. All things carry yin and embrace yang; through their mingling breath, harmony arises. People dislike being orphaned, widowed, or unworthy, yet rulers use these words of themselves. Thus some things gain through loss, while others lose through gain. What others teach, I also teach: the violently overbearing do not meet a natural end. I take this as a fundamental teaching.
The World Is Generated Through Relations, Not Isolated Things
The Dao brings forth a whole; difference emerges within it; differences interact and form a new relation; from this, the myriad things unfold. One, two, and three are not a mechanical list, but a movement from the undivided to difference and then to generative interaction.
All things bear both yin and yang. Harmony does not erase one side or grind both into sameness. It places different forces in a structure capable of further creation.
Why Does an Arch Bridge Stand?

Li Chun and the Zhaozhou Bridge: Do Not Eliminate Force—Let Forces Sustain One Another
In his inscription on the stone bridge over the Xiao River, the Tang writer Zhang Jiazhen attributes the Zhaozhou Bridge to the Sui artisan Li Chun and marvels at a construction whose method people could scarcely explain. Instead of forcing one massive stone across the river, the open-spandrel arch organizes many stones so that weight travels through the arch toward both banks.
The pressure does not disappear; it enters a relation in which it can be shared. Every stone is compressed and passes force onward. Seen alone, this is pressure; within the whole, it becomes stability. The bridge gives concrete form to carrying yin, embracing yang, and achieving harmony through mingling: harmony is not the absence of force, but a structure in which forces do not destroy one another.
最好的结构,不把压力藏起来;
The best structure does not hide pressure; it gives pressure a path.
The Third Is Not Another Isolated Thing, but What Happens Between Two
Both sides of an arch transmit pressure inward. Seen only as directions, they appear to conflict. Yet the keystone organizes those forces and carries compression along the arch into the supports. The weight that could make stones fall becomes a condition of the bridge's stability.
The two banks are the two; the load-bearing relation between them resembles the three; the people, goods, and daily life crossing afterward resemble the myriad things unfolding from that relation. Creation belongs not only to objects, but also to connections rightly formed.
有些东西,任何一方都不能单独创造;
Some things can be created by neither side alone. They appear for the first time only when a relation is formed.
Harmony Is Neither Static Averaging nor the Avoidance of Conflict
If an arch carried no compression, it would not be a working arch. Stability does not come from the disappearance of force, but from its transmission, distribution, and constraint. Mingling preserves encounter and tension; harmony keeps that tension from becoming mutual destruction.
In human relations, harmony does not require silence. Genuine cooperation permits disagreement while building a structure in which criticism improves a plan rather than destroys a person, and division of labor uses differences without turning them into ranks of worth.
Gain and Loss Depend on the Structure They Change
A stone trimmed at its edges suffers loss in size, yet gains a place within an interlocking arch. Gian adds weight and ornament everywhere, but overload turns apparent gain into structural loss.
Laozi is not promising that every loss becomes fortune, nor opposing all growth. He asks whether an addition damages the conditions that carry it, and whether a reduction makes room for a new relation.
The Higher the Position, the More Important It Is to Remember One's Incompleteness
Orphaned, alone, and unworthy were undesirable terms, yet rulers used them for themselves. The reversal is deliberate: the higher the position, the more necessary the reminder of incompleteness. A ruler who imagines himself self-sufficient turns relations into one-way obedience.
A leader capable of carrying others need not pretend to possess every answer. By admitting limited knowledge, constrained power, and dependence on others, that leader makes room for different people within a shared structure.
Strength Is Not the Problem; Rigidity Is
The violently overbearing are not merely strong. They rely on force to subdue others. The rigid beam makes the same point visually: refusing distribution, it tries to span the river alone. Unable to redirect force, it looks strongest while remaining structurally fragile.
A person who must always be right loses the ability to correct. An organization that permits only downward commands prevents bad news from returning. A state that treats every disagreement as a challenge to crush raises the cost of dominance without end. The problem is not power, but power refusing relationship.
Balance Is Not Permanent Equality, and Humility Is Not Self-Erasure
Not every stone in an arch carries identical force, and yin and yang do not mean that everything divides equally. Harmony asks whether the whole can continue and differences can transform one another, not whether every part is cut to the same size.
Gain through loss does not demand endless self-sacrifice. Healthy reduction removes excess, vanity, and rigidity that obstruct the whole. If one side is continually diminished while the other continually grows, the relation is not harmonious but unbalanced.
Ask Not Only What I Gained, but What We Created Together
Yielding one sentence in discussion may allow a better plan to emerge. Cutting a beloved paragraph may let an essay find its structure. Making one fewer decision for a colleague may allow a team to develop judgment.
Judge gain and loss across a longer time and a wider field. What matters is not merely whether one part grows, but whether the system becomes more alive, more capable of holding difference, and more resilient under change.
What Stands Alone Breaks; What Sustains Another Endures
Chapter 42 moves from cosmic generation to political humility, and from reversals of gain and loss to the fate of the violent. One thread connects them: nothing endures through isolation alone. Difference forms relations, relations generate the world, and adjustment allows each part to enter a larger whole.
不是谁压倒谁,桥才出现;
The bridge does not appear because one side defeats the other. It appears because both sides entrust their force to a relation.
